Germany's Alexander Zverev has claimed the last spot in the final four of the ATP Finals with a 7-6 (7-5) 6-3 victory over American John Isner.

The world No.5 will finish second in the Guga Kuerten group with a 2-1 record on Friday to face Lleyton Hewitt group winner Roger Federer in Saturday's semi-finals.

Zverev played six-time ATP Finals champion Federer at last year's season-ending event in their last meeting and lost in three sets.

World No.1 and top seed Novak Djokovic is already through to the penultimate stage as the group leader with a current 2-0 record, regardless of his result against Croatian Marin Cilic later this evening.

Djokovic will play South African Kevin Anderson next, who lost to the 31-year-old Serb in the Wimbledon final last July.

At 21, Zverev is the youngest player to reach the semi-finals since Juan Martin del Potro progressed to the 2009 final.

He is also the first German to qualify for the penultimate stage since Rainer Schuettler in 2003.

Isner, who won one of his two 2018 titles by besting Zverev at the Miami Masters in April, could have had a chance of qualifying if he had taken a set point at 6-5.

However, Zverev forced the 33-year-old into error to earn a tie-break before a netted return from Isner gave Zverev his qualification set.

Zverev broke for a 5-3 lead in the second set and served out his tour-leading 56th match win of the year.
