Legendary Zimbabwe cricketer Heath Streak passed away at the age of 49 in the early hours of September 3. Streak’s wife Nadine confirmed the devastating news through a post on Facebook.

“In the early hours of this morning, Sunday, September 3rd, 2023, the greatest love of my life and the father of my beautiful children, was carried to be with the angels from his home, where he wished to spend his last days surrounded by his family and closest loved ones. He was covered in love and peace and did not walk off the park alone. Our souls are joined for eternity, Streaky. Till I hold you again,” Nadine Streak wrote on Facebook.

Former Zimbabwe captain and coach Heath Streak, who had been suffering from colon cancer, has died at the age of 49.

Heath who played 189 ODIs and 65 tests for Zimbabwe made 1990 and 2943 runs respectively but it was his bowling that grabbed everyone’s attention. He is Zimbabwe’s leading wicket-taker in both formats with 239 wickets and 216 wickets in ODIs and Tests respectively.

The Champion
Heath Streak was suffering from advanced colon and liver cancer and was receiving treatment at a Johannesburg hospital. He was traveling from Bulawayo to Johannesburg on a bi-weekly basis.

Streak made his international debut as a 19-year-old in an abandoned match against South Africa in Bengaluru during the 1993 Hero Cup, a five-team tournament played in India. He also got his Test cap that year, against Pakistan in Karachi, and took eight wickets in the next match in Rawalpindi.

Love for Pakistan
Pakistan was one of Streak’s favorite opponents in Test matches as he took 44 wickets against them his most against any team in the format including three five-wicket hauls out of the seven he took in his career. Streak played in the eight test matches that Zimbabwe won in the course of his test career.

He was a mainstay of the ODI side and played in three World Cups – in 1996, 1999, and 2003 – and took 3 for 36 and 3 for 35 in their wins over India and South Africa in the 1999 tournament in England. Streak became Zimbabwe’s captain in 2000, but it proved a tumultuous tenure
