Melbourne Stars and India wicketkeeper-batter Yastika Bhatia has been ruled out of the remainder of the ongoing WBBL 2024 due to a wrist fracture. Bhatia is now in a race against time to recover for the three-match ODI series against Australia that begins on December 5, right after the finale of 10th season of the WBBL.
Cricbuzz understands Bhatia sustained a "small fracture" to her wrist during the Melbourne derby last Friday (November 15) at the MCG, where she scored 11 off 8 balls. She continued to feature in Stars' immediate next game, against Brisbane Heat in Sydney on Sunday, but ended up missing the subsequent away fixture against Sydney Thunder on Wednesday (November 20) where Sophie Ried replaced her as the team's 'keeper and opener.
Bhatia, meanwhile, is headed home to India to assess the injury further.
India, after having recently dropped long-term opener Shafali Verma for the three-match tour of Australia, have not yet named a replacement for Bhatia in their 16-member squad. After being named in India's T20 World Cup squad, Bhatia did not get a game in the UAE and had only recently made her comeback from a five-month knee injury layoff during the home ODI series against New Zealand at No. 3.
A left-handed opener and wicketkeeper, Bhatia was among the frontline options to open for India in Verma's absence. Priya Punia, who had been recalled to the ODI squad, is another option available to the tourists now should Bhatia not recover in time.
On her maiden WBBL stint, Bhatia made an instant impact on her Stars debut, scoring a quickfire 28-ball 36 in a rain-affected game. A day later, she went on to bag the Player of the Match in her second game, scoring a match-winning 46-ball 57 in a chase of 134 against Hobart Hurricanes. Overall, Bhatia made 154 runs for the Stars in six innings, at an average of 25.66 and strike-rate nearly 105.
