Ubisoft has released a standalone smartphone app for Watch Dogs that it's touting as totally free, without any microtransactions.
The ctOS Mobile app lets users battle it out with Watch Dogs players on console or PC in two game modes, called Race and Free Ride, according to the UbiBlog. Each mode has the console or PC player racing around Chicago from checkpoint to checkpoint, attempting to reach a finish line. But standing in their way is the mobile app user, who can hack the city to cause roadblocks and explosions to stop the other player.
The mobile app is also a standalone experience. While users log in with their Xbox Live, PSN or Uplay profile, the progression system is strictly for the ctOS app, with users gaining experience and new abilities, like upgrading a helicopter pilot and sniper to disrupt console and PC players. "For the console player, it’s exactly like he’s playing any online mode,” said Philippe Baude, lead gameplay designer for the Watch Dogs app.
Last but not least, Ubisoft promises quick matches online so people can play with strangers, and a copy of Watch Dogs isn't necessary to use the ctOS app, which is available for iOS and Android smartphones and tablets. For more on Watch Dogs, check out IGN's review of the open-world game.
