This week sees the launch of a new Kickstarter campaign for a brand new virtual reality (VR) videogame from Proton Pulse developer Justin Moravetz. The project, named Vanguard Valkyrie, is looking to raise $198,000 USD before 22nd August 2014 in order to fund development of a PC version with full support for the Oculus Rift VR head-mounted display (HMD). Further stretch goals also tease Mac and Linux versions as well as a PlayStation 4 edition with support for the Project Morpheus HMD.

Vanguard Valkyrie is described by Moravetz as a fast-paced third-person shooter designed specifically for VR HMDs and driven by ‘music, story, and innovative VR design’. Players control Qu, who pilots a flying suit through a star system. The title is played from the perspective of Qu’s AI companion, BiT. As Qu journeys through space, players must help her dodge debris by simply using the VR HMD’s head-tracking to navigate around them, while also fighting back against swarms of alien parasites. Each of the titles levels will have different environments, including planet-surface levels and more.

Music is also a big focus for the title, with the soundtrack featuring work from Jake Kaufman and Dan Behrens as well as newcomer Meganeko.

While the Kickstarter campaign’s initial goal is set at $198,000, Moravetz hopes to hit even further stretch goals including Mac and Linux support for $210,000, mobile platforms for $250,000, Project Morpheus support for $300,000 and even a version for Nintendo’s Virtual Boy for $1 million. Every backer will be granted immediate access to the title’s demo, no matter how much they pledge. It is compatible with the Oculus Rift DK1 on PC and Mac, with a DK2 version also available on PC. Non-HMD owners apparently will also have their own reasons to try the demo. The title itself is available for an early bird price of $16, with the price increasing to $20 after the first 1000 pledges.

VRFocus will continue to follow Vanguard Valkyrie going forward, reporting back with any more updates on the title’s progress.
