Upcoming virtual reality (VR) horror title The Hum is serious about its support for both the Oculus Rift VR head-mounted display (HMD) and Project Morpheus HMD. Developer Thotwise Games confirmed that the title would support the former along with the title’s announcement earlier in the year, and is targeting the latter with a possible PlayStation 4 support. Speaking to VRFocus, the team revealed that The Hum‘s VR support won’t be a simple add on.

“I really want that the players feel immersed in the game,” Thotwise Games’ Ariel Arias told VRFocus in an interview that will be published in full later this week. “If they don’t, I’m failing. The VR experience is not just something like ‘add Oculus support’. That’s not real VR.

“A good VR experience has many factors that normal screen games haven’t. Timing for example. If you ‘live’ an experience on a standard monitor and it is very slow, maybe you can get bored, or distracted, unless a very good tension resource guides you (like music). But, if you are really immersed in the experience, a slow situation (like waiting to see what is happening outside), can be very, very powerful, because you ARE there.”

Arias went on to reconfirm that The Hum is being developed with VR in mind, assuring that the team will treat the integration properly.

It’s encouraging news for a technology that could so easily be shoehorned into software for the sake of it. The Hum is a first-person experience that will see players trying to survive in a post-apocalyptic world invaded by aliens. Check back later in the week to VRFocus for the full interview with Arias.
