Indian opener Shubman Gill is in doubt for India’s World Cup opener against Australia on October 8 after testing positive for dengue. In case Gill fails to recover for the game against perennial challengers Australia, India will be weighing their options on whether Ishan Kishan or KL Rahul should walk out with captain Rohit Sharma for the start of the innings. The absence of India’s brightest young batting talent in the playing XI will be a setback for the team as he has been in sublime touch this year.
Unlucky Shubman
“He is under the weather,” the official update from BCCI had said. “The medical team is closely monitoring him. We are hoping he gets better soon.” Gill is the leading run-getter in ODIs this year with 1230 runs at an average of 72.35 and a strike rate of 105.03. In his last four ODIs, he smashed two centuries and a half-century, two of those knocks coming against Sunday’s opponents, Australia
Kishan has three half-centuries in five ODIs as an opener this year, to go with an impressive 82 against Pakistan from No. 5. Rahul, who made a comeback from injury during the Asia Cup, last opened in an ODI in August 2022, against Zimbabwe. Overall, he has opened 23 times in ODIs, scoring 915 runs at an average of 43.57. After Gill did not attend India’s training sessions at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Wednesday and Thursday, the team management was hoping for it to be nothing more than a flu, but that was not to be the case.
Hoping For The Best
“Shubhman has had high fever since landing in Chennai. His tests are being done. He will have tests on Friday and a call will be taken on his participation in opening game,” a BCCI source privy to team developments told PTI on the condition of anonymity. “Let’s not jump the gun. If it’s normal viral fever, he could play on antibiotics but it’s completely the medical team’s call,” the report added.
