Rohit Sharma has announced his participation in the upcoming Ranji Trophy match between Mumbai and Jammu & Kashmir. Once he features in the January 23-26 game at the Wankhede in Mumbai, he will have played Ranji Trophy cricket after nearly a decade. His last appearance in a Ranji match was at the same venue in November 2015, against Uttar Pradesh.
The confirmation came during the announcement of the Champions Trophy squad in Mumbai on Saturday. When asked specifically about the possibility of his involvement in domestic cricket, Rohit replied, "Yes, I will play."
Rohit has joined the Mumbai team and was seen training with the Mumbai players for a day. He is likely to continue practicing with the squad till the match starts on January 23. The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) said the team for the Ranji game will be selected on January 20.
Rohit is the latest among a host of top internationals who have adhered to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) directive that players must participate in domestic cricket when free. Rishabh Pant, Shubman Gill, and Yashasvi Jaiswal have all made themselves available for their respective state teams. All of them, including Rohit, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, and Ravindra Jadeja, have been picked in the Champions Trophy squad.
However, there is still no confirmation so far from Jadeja about his participation in Saurashtra's next Ranji match. A Saurashtra Cricket Association (SCA) official stated that the star all-rounder will confirm on Sunday. Saurashtra are set to play Delhi in Rajkot, a match that will not see the much-anticipated participation of Virat Kohli. Besides, there is also no update from KL Rahul, as the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) told Cricbuzz that they are yet to hear from him. Karnataka will play Punjab at home in Bengaluru.
