Patti Smith has been hospitalised after falling ill during her Italian tour.

The rock icon, 76, was forced to cancel her Tuesday performance in Bologna after suffering from a "sudden illness" while on tour.

"With great regret, we inform the kind audience that Patti Smith's concert will not be able to go on stage due to a sudden illness that struck the artist," bosses of the Duse Theatre, the venue of the cancelled gig, said in a statement.

The Because the Night hitmaker was reportedly taken to the Maggiore hospital and kept under observation, according to TG Com 24.

It is not yet clear whether the show will be rescheduled to another date.

Smith's most recent performance took place at the Duomo Di Modena in Modena on Saturday evening. Her next show is scheduled for Thursday at the Teatro Malibran in Venice.

The Gloria hitmaker has been travelling around Italy as part of an eight-show tour. She is scheduled to perform in Chicago, Illinois and Brooklyn, New York later this month.

Smith, who was ranked 177 in Rolling Stone's list of the top 200 greatest singers of all time, has not shared any details regarding the sudden illness.
