Jewel Andrew's unbeaten fifty and Shamar Springer's terrific 4-29 in the middle overs were both in vain as St. Kitts and Nevis Patriots pipped Antigua and Barbados Falcons by just one wicket in a final-ball thriller on the CPL 2024 opening night.

Put in to bat, the Falcons posted 163/4 on the board courtesy of opener Fakhar Zaman's 43 and Andrew's unbeaten fifty in a 61-run stand with Fabian Allen. Anrich Nortje stuck in his very first over to dent Falcons early, but Zaman combined with Koli James (24-ball 22) to lead the 60-run partnership and put the team's batting back on track.

Tabraiz Shamsi broke the crucial stand, denying the Pakistan opener his half-century by seven runs. Falcons in fact lost both the set batters in the space of nine deliveries, and Sam Billings three overs later to slip to 102/4 as the death overs approached.

Andrew, who was going at only slightly over run-a-ball at the time, then took charge and switched gears to help Falcons fetch 51 off the last six overs, getting to a 30-ball fifty himself in the final over. Allen chipped in too with a 17-ball cameo of 24* that included two sixes, as Falcons finished with a competitive total.

Four of Patriots' top-five got starts but none could really convert to make it a comfortable chase, and Springer's spell had SNP in all sorts of trouble at 111/5. Springer struck twice in his succeeding overs to get rid of a set Evin Lewis and the dangerous Trisan Stubbs. A brief partnership ensued, worth 34, between Kyle Mayers (39 off 24) and Odean Smith (19-ball 27) before Springer sent the latter packing and handed Rilee Rossouw a first-ball duck.

Springer, however, wasn't done yet as he pocuhed a terrific boundary-line catch to end Mayers knock two overs later. A brief collapse ensued, including the two-final over wickets with seven required. But, Nortje held his nerve to help his side across the finish line and to a winning start.

Brief scores: Antigua and Barbados Falcons 163/4 in 20 overs (Jewel Andrew 50*, Fakhar Zaman 43) lost to St. Kitts and Nevis Patriots 164/9 in 20 overs (Kyle Mayers 39; Shamar Springer 4-29, Roshon Primus 2-21) by 1 wicket.
