At the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on Sunday, Mohammed Siraj took four wickets in the space of five deliveries in the Asia Cup 2023 final against Sri Lanka. With this Siraj becomes the first Indian to take 4 wickets in an over in International cricket.

Asked to bowl first, India destroyed Sri Lanka’s top order with the help of Siraj’s ferocious new-ball burst. Pathum Nissanka was the first wicket to go to Siraj, who then dismissed Charith Asalanka, Sadeera Samarawickrama, and Dhananjaya de Silva, leaving Sri Lanka in trouble at 12 for five after four overs.

Nissanka was the first victim of Sira’s frantic over after she sent a length delivery to the right of point, where Ravindra Jadeja made a diving catch. After being caught leg-before for a two-ball duck, the in-form Samarawickrama, Charith Asalanka chipped his first ball to Ishan Kishan at cover. De Silva hit a four through far on to avoid the hat-trick ball, and Siraj came back with a quick delivery that resulted in a catch behind the wicket.
In his third over, Siraj dismissed Sri Lankan skipper Dasun Shanaka for a four-ball duck to complete his five-wicket haul.
The 29-year-old also equalled former Sri Lanka pacer Chaminda Vaas for the quickest ODI five-for, reaching the feat in just 16 balls. Vaas achieved the milestone against Bangladesh in 2003.
