The Dark Knight is returning to the video games arena, with a third entry of the popular Lego spin-off series.
Warner Bros. has announced Lego Batman 3: Beyond Gotham, taking the blocky Bruce Wayne and his allies not just out of his hometown but far away from Earth. Developed by Cheshire-based Traveller's Tales, long-time shepherds of the Lego series, the game expands on 2012's Lego Batman 2: DC Superheroes, introducing more characters from the comic book publisher's archives and dipping into its cosmic lore. The chief threat is set to be Superman's villain Brainiac, a rogue artificial intelligence that captures entire civilisations, shrinking and storing them in bottles. He's basically the obsessive fanboy writ large as an intergalactic nightmare. The game promises over 150 unlockable playable heroes and villains, including the hulking Solomon Grundy and Killer Croc upgraded to Lego "Big Fig" characters, a first for the Batman titles.

It won't all be deadly serious battles against apocalyptic alien threats though -- the new trailer retains the quirky sense of humour of the Lego games, with the Justice League teasing Batman for using his new space batsuit just to brood in the void. And just in case you forgot Batman was part of a certain popular movie this summer, there's a joke or two in there to remind you.
Of note to comics fans is that the character designs for Beyond Gotham have been subtlety updated to reflect the "New 52" costumes of DC's comics. Wonder Woman is now in silver, rather than the familiar gold, Superman has lost his red trunks, now sporting only a red belt, and Cyborg has his near-total robotic body.

Warner Bros. has yet to announce a release date beyond "Autumn 2014" but whenever it does land you'll be almost guaranteed to be able to play it -- it's coming out on Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS3, PS4, PS Vita, Wii U, and PC. Holy retail avalanche, Batman!
