Hammer will play lead in 'The Lone Ranger' alongside Depp
The Social Network‘s Armie Hammer has been confirmed to play the title role in The Lone Ranger alongside Johnny Depp.
The Lone Ranger will see Depp re-team with his Pirates Of The Caribbean and Rango director Gore Verbinski in a big-screen version of the hit ’50s show. The script, also written by Pirates Of The Caribbean scribes Ted Elliot and Terry Rossio, is reported to present the film from Tonto‘s point of view.
An adaptation of the show featuring the masked Texas Ranger has been doing the rounds from as early as 2007 when producer Jerry Bruckheimer brought the film to Disney. While Depp has been on-board to play Tonto since 2008, the search for a man to shout ‘Hi-ho-Silver’ had proven unsuccessful with names ranging from Ryan Gosling to Matthew McConaughey falling by the wayside.
But now Disney have confirmed that Hammer, best known for his portrayal of both the Winklevoss twins in last year’s The Social Network, has been confirmed as Tonto‘s ‘Kemo Sabe’.
After breaking through in David Fincher‘s ‘film about Facebook‘, Hammer has subsequently found himself on the casting list of many other major Hollywood directors including Clint Eastwood who cast him opposite Leonardo DiCaprio in the forthcoming biopic of FBI founder J Edgar Hoover.
A release date is yet to be announced for The Lone Ranger.
