John Mayer is relearning how to play guitar after injuring his left index finger in a truck door accident.
The singer-songwriter took to Instagram on Thursday to post a photo of his finger wrapped in bandages with a colourful patterned carpet as the backdrop.
In the accompanying caption, John explained that he had seriously hurt his finger last month but was determined to play his upcoming Dead & Company shows at Sphere in the Las Vegas Valley.
"Last Thursday I injured my left index finger (truck door), and the first thing that went through my mind was 'I really need that finger in a week.' I need all my fingers, but the left index is the team captain of my fretting hand. It will heal just fine, but will be out of commission for a while," he wrote. "In the meantime, I have spent every day practicing guitar using the other three fingers and I think I have it sounding pretty good!"
John went on to note that his guitar playing may sound a little different to fans until his finger fully heals.
"I've always felt like every part of me belongs to these shows, and it's my responsibility to return to the stage each night without screwing up the equipment, and I'm sorry for the misadventure here," the 46-year-old added. "The power of the music and the love for these shows will prevail! See ya tonight."
In response, John's friend Andy Cohen wrote, "See you this weekend. Gonna be GREAT," while musician May Erlewine posted, "I'm sorry! I hope you heal quickly and without consequence. Maybe some new shapes to inspire new songs are the gift."
In addition to his solo career, the Gravity hitmaker has performed with former Grateful Dead members Bob Weir, Mickey Hart, and Bill Kreutzmann since 2015.
Their current Las Vegas residency is set to conclude on 10 August.
