Yashasvi Jaiswal scored his 14th Test fifty - second of the match - and batted out a session in the company of Rishabh Pant to fuel India's hopes of securing a draw at the MCG. They took India to Tea at 112/3 - 228 runs away from the target. More importantly, they shaved off more overs from what remains in the Test, with 38 left to play in the last session.

After being put to the sword by Mitchell Starc operating with the new ball, Jaiswal breathed a touch easily in the post-Lunch period. There wasn't much for the bowlers on the fifth-day pitch and the left-hander was able to play his shots when the opportunity came up.

He indulged in some chatter with Mitchell Starc, prompting Rishabh Pant to calm his batting partner down. The wicketkeeper brought this calm demeanor to his batting too, resisting the urge to even take on Nathan Lyon who he has tormented in the past.

Jaiswal meanwhile, scored his second fifty of the game - and his slowest in the format off 127 balls. He and Pant did what the top three of Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul and Virat Kohli couldn't - see off new-ball spells from Pat Cummins and Starc. Jaiswal in fact, played and missed a bunch of outswingers from the left-armer but got to Lunch unscathed.

Cummins though, produced a double-wicket over, nicking off Rohit Sharma after his cautious start and then bowling a ball that KL Rahul couldn't keep his bat away from. Virat Kohli once again showed early promise of being able to let balls outside the off-stump go but got sucked into nicking one to Usman Khawaja at slips in the final over of the session.

Australia went into the second session in anticipation of inflicting further damage but were met with resistance from Jaiswal and Pant. Having got out to an outrageous attempt at a shuffle-and-lap in the first innings that drew criticism, Pant showcased a different side to his game - defending or letting go of the majority of the balls he faced. He didn't take the bait when Cummins brought on Travis Head and Marnus Labuschagne too, going to Tea with 28 off 93 balls to his name.

Brief Scores: India 369 & 112/3 (Yashasvi Jaiswal 63*, Pat Cummins 2-19, Mitchell Starc 1-24) trail Australia 474 & 234 (Marnus Labuschagne 70; Jasprit Bumrah 5-56, Mohammed Siraj 3-70) by 228 runs
