European heavyweight football clubs like FC Barcelona and Real Madrid who had supported European Super League formation receive a fresh hope of ambition after a landmark European Court of Justice verdict which revived the clubs’ plan to propose a mass tournament like European Super League.
European Super League- a hallmark of European football
European Super League has been hindered previously owing to several objections laid out by football’s governing bodies like UEFA and FIFA. Heavyweight European clubs like FC Barcelona, Juventus and Real Madrid, who were at the helm of formularizing this mass-tournament were threatened of being banned from European tournaments like UEFA Champions League and Europa League, but it seems that the mass protest and demonstrations have worked in their favor as a landmark European Court of Justice has ruled its formation in the favor of the clubs.

In response to this verdict, UEFA has reacted to the news with a statement in which they had promised to “to uphold the European football pyramid, ensuring that it continues to serve the broader interests of society.”
They further mentioned, “UEFA takes note of the judgment delivered today by the ECJ in the European Super League case. This ruling does not signify an endorsement or validation of the so-called ‘super league’; it rather underscores a pre-existing shortfall within UEFA’s pre-authorization framework, a technical aspect that has already been acknowledged and addressed in June 2022. UEFA is confident in the robustness of its new rules, and specifically that they comply with all relevant European laws and regulations.”
Football’s governing body added on its pre-existing solidarity, as they said, “UEFA remains resolute in its commitment to uphold the European football pyramid, ensuring that it continues to serve the broader interests of society. We will continue to shape the European sports model collectively with national associations, leagues, clubs, fans, players, coaches, EU institutions, governments and partners alike. We trust that the solidarity-based European football pyramid that the fans and all stakeholders have declared as their irreplaceable model will be safeguarded against the threat of breakaways by European and national laws.”
European Court of Justice today confirmed that “neither UEFA nor FIFA can impose sanctions on clubs that participate in alternative competitions”.

Echoing on Barcelona’s statements, their counterparts and arch-rivals Real Madrid has also responded in their support, as they said, “First of all, that European club football is not and will never be a monopoly again. And secondly, that from today the clubs will be the owners of their destiny. Clubs see fully recognized our right to propose and promote European competitions that modernize our sport and attract fans from all over the world. In short, today the Europe of freedoms has triumphed again and today soccer and its fans have also triumphed.”
