Kate Cross picks six wickets in England's win

Kate Cross picked career-best figures of 6 for 30 and then returned to score an unbeaten 38 to see off her team's win over Ireland in the ODI series opener in Belfast. Despite Cross's exploits, Ireland were carried past the 200-run mark by Orla Prendergast's 76, but that proved insufficient in the end.

Ireland captain Gaby Lewis opted to bat on a sunny morning, but both she and her opening partner Una Raymond-Hoey fell early. Amy Hunter joined forces with Predengarst to add 53 for the third wicket. Once Hunter fell, Predengarst found another able ally in Leah Paul, who more than doubled the score from 74/3 before Cross returned to dismiss the half-centurion. From 151/4, Ireland crashed and burned their way to getting bowled out for 210, with Cross wrapping up the tail swiftly. The England captain ended the Irish innings with two wickets off as many deliveries.

England too lost a couple of early wickets in response, slipping to 32 for 2, before their recovery came via Hollie Armitage and Paige Scholfield's third-wicket alliance. The pair however was dismissed in the space of six balls after a strong stand, giving Ireland hopes of a way back. The troika of Freya Kemp, Bess Heath and Cross extinguished those hopes, even as Ireland managed to reduce England to six down. Cross, who set the game up with her stupendous bowling performance, remained unbeaten in the end and fittingly, scored the winning runs in the 35th over.

Brief Scores: Ireland women 210 in 46.5 overs (Orla Prendergast 76, Amy Hunter 37; Kate Cross 6-30) lost to England women 211/6 in 34.5 overs (Hollie Armitage 44, Kate Cross 38*; Orla Prendergast 2-27) by 4 wickets
