Upbeat Melbourne Victory star Emily Gielnik admitted carrying the confidence from her starring Matildas super sub role in the win over Chile into Friday night’s derby win.
Gielnik’s player-of-the-match performance, which included a goal in the 2-0 win at AAMI Park, has inspired Victory’s best start to a W-League season and the attacker says teams should fear them.
Joining Victory after nine years at Brisbane Roar, Gielnik’s move has paid off with Matildas coach Alen Stajcic rewarding her with international minutes ahead of next year’s World Cup.
Gielnik is relishing her soccer for club and country and wants to entertain.
“I was pretty happy and honestly I haven’t scored for my country for a really long time. I felt really good out there and yeah, I wish that was a little bit longer.
“I was so happy to score (for Victory) obviously ... I just want to keep playing. I wanted to get another goal to be honest, I wanted a third.
“I want to push that this season, that we give people that travel and come out to watch us, I want us to entertain and push forward right to the 95th minute.”
Victory plays W-League heavyweights Sydney FC next week with Gielnik hoping their rich form continues, adding the City win was a huge boost after the local rivals have dominated the league with three straight titles.
“I actually stood up and said there’s a lot of talk and media and few articles about how we were the underdogs and I said the pressure was all on City,’’ she said,
“I love being on the underdog, so it was really important that we came together and showed that we are a good side.
“Sydney for me is just another team. We need to really put the pressure off ourselves and the other teams that should be a bit scared of us from now on.
“I really think we’ve got the capabilities within our team and that we should worry less about other teams and more about how we’re going to play.”
