The annual presentations to British songwriters will this year be held in London on May 28. Cornershop are nominated for ‘Brimful Of Asha’ in the Best Song Musically And Lyrically category. Radiohead’s ‘Paranoid Android’ and Robbie Williams’ ‘Angels’ are the other two songs nominated in the category.
Cornershop are currently on tour in Japan but their spokesman told NME: “Tjinder’s really chuffed about it. Out of all the industry awards it’s probably the one that means the most because it’s actually about songwriting rather than record sales or anything like that. That said, he’s up against Robbie Williams and Radiohead in the same category so it’s pretty formidable competition.”
An Ivor Novello spokeswoman told NME that the Ivors were voted for by members of the British Academy Of Songwriters And Composers. “Basically it’s people voting on their peers. Brian Ferry and Stevie Winwood were among the voters one year.”
When Pulp won the Best Song Musically And Lyrically category in 1996 for ‘Common People’, the board members famously included a 92-year-old songwriter who’d penned several Broadway musicals.
Other notable nominations in this year’s awards include The Verve for ‘The Drugs Don’t Work’ and Radiohead for ‘Karma Police’ in Best Contemporary Song. The Spice Girls’ ‘Spice Up Your Life’ is in the running in the International Hit Of The Year category. Texas take two of the three nominated places in the Most Performed Work category with ‘Say What You Want’ and ‘Black Eyed Boy’.
