Chelsea have finally found their groove back in the English football circuit as they defeated Newcastle United in an intense penalty shoot-out, as Pochettino’s side reached the semifinals of the coveted Carabao Cup. Mudryk was the hero for Chelsea as he scored the equalizer forcing the game into penalties as Kieran Trippier and Ritchie miss their respective spot-kicks to hand Chelsea a well-deserved victory.
Chelsea defeats Newcastle United
Chelsea has been under fire since the beginning of the season, as they are rather enduring a hard time in the Premier League. After finishing in the middle of the table last season to not qualify for European football, Blues’ fans were not satisfied with their side’s dismal performances. Even after a change at helm with Todd Boehly bringing Mauricio Pochettino on deck, Chelsea are still sitting on the 10th position, mustering a meagre 22 points from 17 games.
But, Chelsea supporters would rejoice after a mid-week happiness when the Blues’ defeated Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United in a rather competitive game, which saw a see-saw of emotions in Stamford Bridge leading to an overcome of a stern test presented by the Magpies. Although the match started with a Callum Wilson strike within first twenty minutes as Chelsea was looking at a damaging defeat, but a late twist at the end could bring Pochettino’s Chelsea career back in right gear.

Kieran Tripper- the legendary star for the Magpies would consider himself as a spoilsport in Newcastle’s semifinal qualification hopes, as his tame header in front of Mudryk led the game into penalties.
Chelsea’s urge to go back on level terms
After Wilson struck early to help the visitors go ahead, Blues were desperately trying to go past Newcastle’s sturdy defensive line, but were repeatedly failing. Only silver lining was Newcastle defender Trippier’s form in the domestic season, as he was not on his slight best as he came on the back of a horrendous performance after being involved in all three goals in their defeat against Everton.
Several chances spurned for the Blues as Raheem Sterling’s ball was blocked in a miraculous goal-line clearance from Bruno Guimaraes as the Brazilian was prompt enough to see the ball away, whereas Dubravka delivered to his expectations between the sticks. Although Chelsea’s summer recruit Nkunku made his official debut after a multi-million dollar move from German giants RB Leipzig, a chance was rarely presented for Pochettino’s men who were struggling to get past a sturdy Newcastle defensive sector.

It was the Ukrainian star Mudryk who pounced on a rare mistake committed by Newcastle’s seasoned veteran Kieran Trippier, as the game was tempted to be decided on penalties. Trippier was introduced on the field owing to an injury addition to Howe’s men after Emil Krafth, and later paid a heavy price for his mistake, as his header mistakenly fell into two minutes of stoppage time in front of Mudryk, who sprang upon his bewildering pace to bring his side on level terms, thus forcing the game onto penalties, when custodian Petrovic made a huge save to deny Matt Ritchie, leading his side to the semifinals.
Djordje Petrovic- the hero between the sticks
Petrovic, the former New England revolution star was the hero of the night, when he saved a crucial penalty from Matt Ritchie during the tie-breaker. After the game ended 1-1 after Mudryk sprang upon Trippier’s jaded mistake, the England veteran went on to hit his penalty wide past Petrovic, thus failing to reduce the deficit in the game.
Petrovic proved his addition to the squad, when he was responsible for handing Eddie Howe’s men another painful defeat within a week of their Champions League exit, by saving Ritchie’s penalty. Nkunku came off the bench to score his respective spot-kick, while two missed from the Toons ended the game in Chelsea’s favor, thus sending them into the next round. The semifinal draw would be made after the Liverpool and West Ham tie, with first legs to be played on the week commencing 8th January, as Pochettino and his team find a way to enjoy the approaching Christmas break.
