Tayla Harris is a formidable force in the boxing ring but trash-talk just isn’t the AFLW star’s go.
With good reason, too.
The 21 year-old year Carlton spearhead, who will fight for the Australian middleweight title at Melbourne Pavilion against Perth contender Sarah Dwyer, just isn’t any good at it.
“I just can’t even do it in footy, on the field, I come up with the lamest trash-talk you will ever hear so it is best for everyone that I don’t,” Harris said.
“I’ve never been one for name-calling or starting any pre-fight (sledging).”
The good intentions, however, end there for the Brisbane junior.
Harris, if successful tonight, will go in search of fights abroad in pursuit of a world title.
“I deserve to be here, definitely,” Harris, who has won all four of her professional bouts, said.
“This is a step. It’s an awesome thing to be fighting for, and hopefully win, but it’s one of the steps to what the end goal is … to pursue world titles.
“I don’t think will be detrimental to my footy career, if anything, mentally and the training load will improve my footy because I will, in the off-season, continue to be an athlete.”
Harris covered the 72.5kg limit comfortably last night, having shed eight kilograms in the past month alone abiding by a new gluten-and-dairy-free diet.
But Harris, who will enter the ring to Beyonce hit Partition, has yet to settle on a “fight name” — opting instead for a symbol.
“You need to maybe earn one, just like a nickname at footy, you need to do something really before you get one … so I decided a symbol,” Harris said.
“I want the lightning bolt to be my symbol so … I got it tattooed on my head, behind my ear, so I’m committed.”
