JARROD Kenny says he harbours no bad feelings towards the Perth Wildcats despite being shocked by the club’s decision not to offer him a contract for this season.

Kenny confronts his former teammates for the first time on Saturday night after moving to play for Cairns.

The 33-year-old’s contract with Perth included a club option to retain him for the 2018-19 season, but with Mitch Norton available as a free agent, the Wildcats released Kenny and signed the Australian Boomer.

Kenny said he thought he’d be playing for the Wildcats again this season. “They said to me that they wanted me back and that didn’t happen,” Kenny said.

“But that’s sport. There’s not enough time in the day to be worried about things like that.

“I’m pretty positive and upbeat about things. I was just happy for the opportunity I got to go there three years ago and win a couple of championships.”

Kenny is one of five former Wildcats at Cairns. Nate Jawai, Alex Loughton, Dexter Kernich-Drew and Lucas Walker are all playing for the Taipans this season and assistant coach Jamie O’Loughlin previously worked for Perth. Loughton is recovering from an ankle injury and won’t play today.

The Taipans are on the bottom of the ladder with only one win. But the Wildcats are undermanned after a spate of injuries and will be without Angus Brandt (ankle), Damian Martin (calf) and Terrico White (hamstring).

Wildcats coach Trevor Gleeson said the Taipans couldn’t be underestimated and having inside information made them even more dangerous.

“They pretty much know our stuff,” Gleeson said.

“Their record says they are 1-6 but, realistically, they should be 4-3. Last weekend they should have had a win and a couple of games this year they should have had a win.”

The match will see the league’s two leading scorers going head-to-head.

Import Melo Trimble is averaging 25 points per game for the Taipans — one point more than Wildcats star Bryce Cotton.

Kenny said Trimble, 23, was destined to play at a higher level.

“Melo is tough. He’s certainly talented,” Kenny said.

“I don’t think he’ll be around this league for too much longer. He’s got the potential to go to the NBA. I hope he makes it.

“He is a little bit deceptive. He’s quite strong through his core and is always balanced when he’s on the floor.

“He can score but he also has great vision. He’s super nice in all aspects of the game.”
