England's regular Test captain Ben Stokes will return to cricket nine weeks after he sustained a hamstring injury during The Hundred as he has been declared fit to lead the tourists in the second Multan Test against Pakistan, starting Tuesday.
Stokes had been building his fitness on the sidelines of the first Multan Test and utilised the time between sessions to get the desired workload as a batter and bowler. He batted and bowled in nets and had a brief close-in slip catching drill on Monday.
Matt Potts is the only other change in the XI that mauled Pakistan by an innings and 47 runs last week as England have lined up an all Durham seam attack with Stokes and Brydon Carse, who returned 140 for four across 38 overs spread over two Pakistan innings. Potts played the first and second Tests against Sri Lanka at Manchester and Lord's in August.
Stokes and Potts come in for Chris Woakes and Gus Atkinson, who have been rested.
Despite Pakistan making their plans clear of re-using the same surface for the second Test, England will be going into the contest with the same combination as the first Test - three seamers and two spinners.
The names of finger spinners Jack Leach and Shoaib Bashir will appear in the playing section of the nominations sheet before the toss as leg-spinner Rehan Ahmed missed out the second Test.
