Cameron Bancroft is set for a lengthy period on the sidelines after breaking both shoulder and nose following an awful collission with Sydney Thunder teammate Daniel Sams during the BBL clash against Perth Scorchers on Friday (January 3). He is certain to miss the remainder of the BBL season with a very real possibility that his domestic season might also be over.
Sams, on the other hand, is expected to be sidelines for at least 12 days after both players were diagnosed to have suffered concussions. Both Sams and Bancroft spent the night in the Perth hospital where they were admitted after being rushed off the field.
Providing an update on the pair, Thunder General Manger Trent Copeland said both Sams and Bancroft were in "good spirits". "Both players in good spirits and well looked after last year," he said on Channel 7. "The Perth Scorchers and the medical staff on ground and the hospital staff were incredible all through the night. Big thanks from me and the Thunder and both players and their families.
"Two incredibly tough individuals as well. Talk to anyone about Cameron Bancroft and how he plays the game and what he is made of. He is tough stuff. Bangers was watching the game last night and watched every ball right to the conclusion."
With Bancroft out and Sams set to miss at least the next four games, Thunder will have to grapple for resources if they are to consolidate their strong start to the season (four wins in five). They will have teenaaged sensation Sam Konstas potentially available after his participation in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. But his participation could be brief with Australia's tour of Sri Lanka starting on January 29 and a pre-tour camp in UAE to precede that.
