Babar Azam and Naseem Shah have been brought back into the Pakistan Test squad for the forthcoming multi-format tour of South Africa. Interestingly, Shaheen Afridi has been named only in the white-ball squads as part of his workload management to prepare for the Champions Trophy next year. After an innings defeat to England in the first Test in Multan, Pakistan dropped the above-mentioned trio to prepare spin-friendly wickets, and managed to turn over England in the remaining two matches.

Babar, skipper Mohammad Rizwan, Salman Ali Agha and Saim Ayub are the only players to feature in all three squads.

The other players to return to the Test squad are Mohammad Abbas, Khurram Shahzad and Mir Hamza. Offspinner Sajid Khan, who was named Player of the Series against England in October, was left out as Pakistan opted for the lone spinner in Noman Ali. This decision was taken on the basis of conditions expected in Cape Town and Centurion.

Abbas, who last played for Pakistan in August 2021, has had an outstanding Quaid-e-Azam Trophy as he picked 31 wickets in five games this season for Lahore B. Shahzad too will come into the two-match series in good form as he scalped 15 wickets for Pakistan Shaheens against Sri Lanka A last month.

Meanwhile, for the ODI squad, Sufiyan Muqeem has earned his maiden call-up to the ODI squad for the first time. He has picked up eight wickets so far in the ongoing T20I series against Zimbabwe in two matches including career best figures of 5 for 3 in the second game. The Pakistan T20I squad will travel directly to South Africa from Zimbabwe after the completion of the third match on December 6 while the Test squad will reach on December 13.

Pakistan are slated to play three T20Is, three ODIs and two Tests from December 10 to January 7. The Test squad will be led by Shan Masood while the white-ball sides will be led by Mohammad Rizwan.

Tests: Shan Masood (captain), Saud Shakeel (vice-captain), Aamir Jamal, Abdullah Shafique, Babar Azam, Haseebullah (wk), Kamran Ghulam, Khurram Shahzad, Mir Hamza, Mohammad Abbas, Mohammad Rizwan (wk), Naseem Shah, Noman Ali, Saim Ayub and Salman Ali Agha

ODIs: Mohammad Rizwan (captain & wk), Abdullah Shafique, Abrar Ahmed, Babar Azam, Haris Rauf, Kamran Ghulam, Mohammad Hasnain, Muhammad Irfan Khan, Naseem Shah, Saim Ayub, Salman Ali Agha, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Sufyan Moqim, Tayyab Tahir and Usman Khan (wk)

T20Is: Mohammad Rizwan (captain & wk), Abrar Ahmed, Babar Azam, Haris Rauf, Jahandad Khan, Mohammad Abbas Afridi, Mohammad Hasnain, Muhammad Irfan Khan, Omair Bin Yousuf, Saim Ayub, Salman Ali Agha, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Sufyan Moqim, Tayyab Tahir and Usman Khan (wk)
