The All India Football Federation (AIFF) is considering the possibility of co-hosting the 2034 FIFA World Cup alongside Saudi Arabia. In a bid to make this ambitious plan a reality, the AIFF aims to host approximately 10 matches of the football extravaganza.
Saudi Arabia Secures Hosting Rights
Saudi Arabia successfully secured the hosting rights for the 2034 FIFA World Cup, with FIFA confirming them as the sole bidder in October. Now, India, in collaboration with Saudi Arabia, envisions playing a significant role in hosting and organizing matches during the global tournament.
India not only harbors aspirations of co-hosting the event but also supported Saudi Arabia’s bid to host the mega event during the Emergency Congress of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) held on October 18, 2023.
Kalyan Chaubey, the President of the AIFF, emphasized the idea of India becoming a co-host for the 2034 World Cup during discussions with the executive committee members. He urged strategic planning to facilitate India’s involvement and proposed hosting around 10 matches during the prestigious tournament.
According to the draft minutes of the AIFF Executive Committee meeting held on November 9, the president’s proposal was presented to the committee. The minutes revealed, “The president informed the house that India should think or plan to work towards being a co-host for the World Cup in 2034.”

FIFA’s Guidelines and 2034 World Cup Details
The 2034 FIFA World Cup will feature 48 teams and will be hosted entirely in Asia, with Saudi Arabia as the primary host. FIFA mandated that the hosting rights were open only to nations in Asia or Oceania, aligning with their plan to hold the tournament within a specific geographical region. The decision was influenced by the forthcoming 2030 edition, set to be hosted across three continents (Africa, Europe, and South America).
In addition to securing the 2034 FIFA World Cup, Saudi Arabia is poised to host the 2027 AFC Asian Cup, affirming its prominence as a key destination for top-tier football events.
The AIFF’s exploration of co-hosting represents a strategic move for India in elevating its football presence on the global stage. As plans unfold, the prospect of witnessing India play a pivotal role in the 2034 World Cup becomes an exciting proposition for football enthusiasts worldwide.
