Liverpool might have been stunned by one of the below-par teams this season in Europe, with Ligue 1 relegation strugglers Toulouse defeated the mighty Reds at their home arena 3-2. With a 5-1 victory in their last game at Anfield, former UEFA Champions League champions have suffered one of their horrible upsets, to add to their woes, boss Jurgen Klopp lost his cool in the post-match conference, labelling their “chaotic” performance.

Liverpool defeated by Ligue 1 strugglers
Liverpool had named a pretty strong starting eleven, with Klopp making nine changes to the side which drew against Premier League surprise Luton Town, but it still contained some of the bigger names in the form of last match hero, Luis Diaz, who started his first match after his father’s release from the grasp of kidnappers last night. The bench was quite frantic for the Reds, featuring the likes of Salah, Szoboszlai and Trent Alexander-Arnold. All of them were introduced at half-time, with Darwin Nunez being shouldering the responsibility of spearheading the attack, as Diogo Jota being on the field for final ten minutes to pull things back with his goal on the last minute, making the score 3-2 in the French club’s favor. The margin could have been bigger, had Thijs Dallinga’s brace was not ruled out due to foul and offside, respectively.

But, chaos arose into seven minutes of stoppage time when young center-half Quansah restored some parity to snatch a solitary point, helping him with his first senior goal, only to be stopped by VAR to disallow the goal. Couple of moves prior to the goal, the ball had ricocheted Alexis Mac Allister’s chest into his arm, with Bulgarian referee Kabakov being called to VAR screen to disallow the goal. Klopp, in the conference had mentioned about the decision when he said, “I only saw the video back now and for me it’s not a handball – but how can I decide that?” Former Liverpool pundits like Steve McManaman were angered with the decision, with Jamie Carragher commenting VAR to be a “disgrace”.

“Loved to play better”
Klopp was seen a bit distraught after their loss, while getting angered at the home side’s noisy atmosphere. He was heard saying, “We were as organized as this press conference – pretty chaotic. We were not aggressive enough. We gave balls easily away. Real mistakes. With all the possession you have obviously you should create more but you cannot concede three goals here, that makes no sense. They fought harder and it was deserved. Congratulations to Toulouse. You can play as good as you want but if you don’t win decisive battles you have no chance in football.”

The VAR decision at the end seems to have added more to Liverpool’s woes. Their bitter camaraderie with the video assistance does not seem to end as this is not the first time they have been subjected to the VAR fiasco, with the first coming against Tottenham, when the Spurs held on to win 2-1 in the dying minutes, with a own-goal mishap from Matip. Former English keeper Rachel Brown-Finnis said, “A great finish by Quansah who thought he had equalized but I think it was rightly ruled out in the end. He showed real determination to get his side back in the game, like I said a good finish from the defender, but it is a handball.”

"Who had the idea to do the press conference here?" 🤨

Klopp mentioned about his side’s defensive frailties, which, according to him was responsible for their defeat. He added, “I am a bit more concerned that I would have loved us to have played better, to be honest. That’s my main issue tonight. In the end we were intense, we threw everything in, but the problem is in a football game you have to make the decisive things in the right moment to do them right.”

Liverpool are still set to qualify for the knockouts, with one win from their last two games would ensure them a place in the top two. If they defeat LASK and Toulouse is held against St. Gilloise, then their chances will surge and would guarantee a place in the next round.

20-year-old Jarell Quansah thought he scored the equalizer in the final minute of stoppage time for Liverpool.

The goal was overturned due to an Alexis Mac Allister handball, and Toulouse won 3-2.
