E3 2014 saw London-based indie developer Bossa Studios reveal that it would be bringing its popular comedic videogame, Surgeon Simulator, to PlayStation 4 in the near future. The developer also revealed intentions to support both the PlayStation Move motion controller and the Project Morpheus virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD) for the title. Now a release date for the port has been announced.
The latest version of the title, dubbed Surgeon Simulator: Anniversary Edition, will hit Sony Computer Entertainment’s (SCE) console next week on 12th August 2014 in the US and 13th August in EU. It contains a mix of challenges from both the Steam and iPad releases of the title as well as missions that allow players to operate on aliens. The title will also be on display at Gamescom 2014 next week from 13th – 17th August.
Surgeon Simulator tasks players with carrying out complex and often life-threatening operations while encumbering them with awkward controls. This usually results in hilarious if fatal accidents that see players breaking bones, losing organs and generally making a mess of things. The title already features support for the Oculus Rift VR HMD in its PC release, which was launched in 2013.
No mention of the Project Morpheus or PlayStation Move compatibility was made in the announcement. Presumably support will be added close to the launch of the headset itself, though that’s currently thought to be in 2015 at the very earliest. For now the title operates with a Dualshock 4 controller. VRFocus will continue to follow Surgeon Simulator: Anniversary Edition going forward, reporting back with any further updates on its VR support.
