A thrilling first half has South Korea 1-0 ahead at a wet Suncorp Stadium.
The visitors were on the ropes from the whistle, with the Socceroos simply electrifying going forward and peppering Kim Seunggyu’s goal with shots.
But the home side’s all-out attack amounted to nothing when the Koreans snatched a shock lead in the 22nd minute.
Kim Minjae’s long, lofted ball over the top caught the Socceroos’ defence napping and Hwang Uijo made no mistake with the finish.
Josh Risdon, Robbie Kruse, Aaron Mooy and Tom Rogic all had opportunities, with Rogic in particular in scintillating form.
Graham Arnold had promised pace and creativity going forward and that’s what the Socceroos delivered - they were just missing the final touch.
The Socceroos coach opted to start Jamie Maclaren up front, with Kruse and Mathew Leckie providing the width. But, as promised, there was plenty of rotation with fullbacks Risdon and Aziz Behich galloping forward and Mooy getting forward.
It’s the Socceroos first game on home soil this year and they have only lost once in their last eight matches at Suncorp. That defeat, though, came against South Korea in the 2015 Asian Cup.
