Welcome to seedpool 3.9.11 :hyper:
This update all started with us wanting to move webservers, greener pastures and all.
The original plan was just to copy over our existing codebase and make zero changes, just hardware upgrades.
But then we decided at the last minute to go full Leroy Jenkins and patch our shit to the latest Unit3d.
Updating Unit3d is a shitshow in the best of times. The last time we did it we killed a webserver, were offline for 4 days, and ultimately needed the unit3d lead dev to ssh in and rescue our asses.
So we’re honestly kind of stunned at how smooth it went.
It’s hard to explain the sheer amount of duct tape needed to hold this tracker together. You see, Unit3d has forums, which we don’t use (these fine boards are discourse forums). Unit3d has a chat box on the front page for torrent announces, which we don’t use (IRC master race).
Unit3d has a whole donation system tied into it, with events, and a flashy donation link on every page’s navbar, and we don’t use any of that.
But all these systems have code in place that very often conflicts with our own modifications to the codebase.
There’s also our whole seedpool-based economy that is unique to us, custom views for profiles, things like BON here we call seed points ect.
So we can’t exactly just clone the Unit3d 9 repo and start her up. In fact the unit3d team does not even provide an install script anymore so getting this up and running at all is a small miracle.
The last count is ~400 commits that Tetra had to go through line by line to ensure it all jives with our own code.
Poor dude is sleeping right now as I type this up.
But we did it lads :hyper:
The latest and greatest Unit3d 9.1.1 on an AMD EPYC 9454 beast of a machine.
Now due to the aforementioned near total lack of planning, I only know of the of the sweet new earnings panel Tetra put in, and have no idea of all the new unit3d features, so I’m gunna go check those out and report back
