In a significant prelude to the IPL 2024 season, fast bowler Avesh Khan is on the move, set to trade Lucknow Super Giants’ purple for Rajasthan Royals’ blue. The swap involves the acquisition of top-order batter Devdutt Padikkal by Super Giants. The deal, conceived by the franchises and players in the past week, is awaiting the official seal from the BCCI, expected later this week.
Avesh Khan’s Transition to Rajasthan Royals
Avesh Khan, currently part of the India squad for the T20I series against Australia, was a marquee buy for Super Giants in the 2022 mega auction, secured for a substantial INR 10 crore (US$ 1.2 million approx.). The pace sensation will bring his skills to the Royals, who, in turn, will part ways with INR 7.75 crore (US$ 945,000 approx.) and welcome Devdutt Padikkal to the Super Giants camp.
Despite their promising starts in IPL, both players faced challenging outings in the 2023 season. Devdutt Padikkal, retained by Royals, struggled to meet the expectations set for him in the top-order role, tallying 637 runs at an average of 23.59 and a strike rate of 125.88 in 28 matches across the 2022 and 2023 seasons. Avesh Khan, after an impressive stint with Super Giants in 2022, grappled with underprepared pitches in Lucknow, finishing 2023 with eight wickets at 35.37.
Devdutt Padikkal’s shift to Super Giants marks his third IPL franchise. Originating from Royal Challengers Bangalore, where he spent two seasons, Padikkal’s stint with Royals didn’t yield the anticipated results. With Super Giants, the talented batter aims to rejuvenate his IPL journey.

Avesh Khan’s Quest for Redemption at Royals
For Avesh Khan, this trade brings him to his third IPL team, with a chance for redemption at Rajasthan Royals. After an impactful season with Delhi Capitals in 2021, he became Super Giants’ highest wicket-taker in the 2022 season. However, the challenges of the 2023 season prompt a fresh start with Royals. The pace department at Royals, featuring Prasidh Krishna, Navdeep Saini, Kuldeep Sen, Sandeep Sharma, and KM Asif, offers a dynamic environment for Avesh to reclaim his form.
“Avesh has proved his mettle in recent years to be one of the top Indian pacers in the country,” said Kumar Sangakkara, Director of Cricket at Royals. “He has the ability to both swing and seam the ball, and is an effective asset at both the start of the innings and towards the end. He will prove to be a valuable addition to our pace-bowling department, and we are looking forward to having him contribute to the team’s successes.”
This trade, the second ahead of the IPL 2024 season, follows the earlier transfer of Romario Shepherd from Super Giants to Mumbai Indians. The IPL has set a November 26 deadline for franchises to declare their retention lists, with the player auction scheduled for December 19 in Dubai. The cricketing fraternity awaits more such strategic maneuvers as teams gear up for a revamped season.
