On Saturday, November 4, New Zealand’s new-found prodigy Rachin Ravindra achieved a remarkable milestone in the 2023 World Cup, scoring his third century in a match against Pakistan led by Babar Azam at Bangalore’s M Chinnaswamy Stadium.
In addition to his century, the left-handed batsman set several records during his exceptional innings. He became only the third Black Caps batsman to amass 500 or more runs in a single edition of the World Cup. In 2019, Kane Williamson scored 578 runs from 10 matches at an average of 82.57 and a strike rate of 74.96, with a top score of 148. In 2015, Martin Guptill, who is not part of the current squad, scored 547 runs from nine matches at an average of 68.37 and a strike rate of 104.58, with a top score of 237 not out.

Rachin’s three hundreds are also the most for any batter before turning 25 in the men’s ODI World Cup, surpassing Sachin Tendulkar’s two. The two batters are currently leveled on 523 for most runs scored before turning 25 in an edition of the World Cup.

Ravindra also established the record for the most centuries by a New Zealand batsman in a single edition of the World Cup, surpassing Glenn Turner (1975), Martin Guptill (2015), and Kane Williamson (2019), who each scored two centuries.
Furthermore, Ravindra secured the record for the most centuries by a New Zealand batsman in the 50-over World Cup, surpassing Nathan Astle, Stephen Fleming, Guptill, Scott Styris, Glenn Turner, and Williamson, each with two centuries to their names.
In the match against Pakistan, New Zealand made an impressive start after being put in to bat, with Ravindra and Devon Conway leading the way. While Conway was dismissed, Ravindra continued to play confidently and reached his half-century off 51 balls. Subsequently, he formed a valuable partnership with Williamson, contributing to New Zealand’s strong position. In the 34th over’s second ball, Ravindra hit Mohammad Wasim Jr for a four on the leg side to reach 99. With the next ball, he survived a close call after missing a delivery outside the off-stump.
