Troubled couple Sofia (Carolina Gaitan) and Josh (Allan Hawco) are in Colombia (Sofia’s home country) for a presentation. Matters are tight between them as soon as we meet them and come to the fore when they find that they have to share a hotel room and there’s only one bed.
With an unscheduled day off, and Josh raring to get out and see the beauty of the country, and Sofia deciding that she wants to trek too the set off into the depths if the jungle. They are warned against an area called Las Arenas (The Sands) it’s a bit vague as to why, large snakes and creatures inhabit the place they are told.
They soon find out, after a botched robbery that the quicksand is the real problem when they fall in a pit and get stuck. Then they have to contend with the jungle nasties that include a very large snake and smaller but just as nasty ants. In this situation the only option is teamwork so their bickering turns 180° to mutual support and introspection.
Quicksand is a variation on the stranded at sea, desert, island, boat etc. Only that isn’t quite the case here, with another strand in the film that deadens comparisons with The Shallows, Walkabout and Open Water and the like.
Also being trapped in the jungle doesn’t quite have the vast visual, and psychological horror of seemingly endless sand or water. In this case director Andreas Beltran and writer Matt Pitts have to rely on creating a sense of claustrophobia more towards Buried.
They don’t quite manage that as while the pair are trapped, pretty solidly, they have to contend with the various attacks and illness that then translate to body mutilation, blood and gore. Not that this is very bloody film; in some respect it’s fairly conventional in set up, and a little predictable. Nevertheless it’s an interesting idea and very watchable.
Quicksand will be on Shudder from 14 July 2023.
