Olivia Rodrigo has admitted that she accidentally followed her ex-boyfriend on Instagram.
Though the Vampire singer's public Instagram account usually shows that she follows zero people on the platform, fans and reporters noticed on 2 July last year that she followed and then quickly unfollowed her ex, Joshua Bassett.
Olivia confirmed the mishap, without mentioning Joshua by name, during an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Thursday.
"I try to follow zero people because it helps me be off of my phone, you know, off of social media," she said. "There was this very embarrassing encounter once where I was stalking my ex, as one does, sue me, I'm sorry. And I accidentally followed him because I was stalking him."
"I was just following one person so it was super obvious that I was following him and my friend ran into my room like, 'Oh my god, did you mean to follow him?! Unfollow him!'" Olivia continued. "And I went and grabbed my phone and I went to open the Instagram app and the second I opened the app, my phone died. I couldn't find a charger so I was just following my ex for a while. It was quite embarrassing."
She concluded, "People were like, 'Oh my gosh, she's hacked,' and I'm like, 'Yeah, you guys, be safe!'"
Olivia and Joshua first sparked a relationship after meeting on the set of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series in 2019.
Although they never publicly confirmed their romance or the split, rumours of a breakup arose when Joshua was spotted out with Sabrina Carpenter in July 2020 and Olivia cryptically posted about "failed relationships" one month later.
Fans believe the relationship inspired songs such as Drivers License and Deja Vu, among others.
