NZ vs BAN 3rd ODI: In a historic turn of events at McLean Park in Napier, Bangladesh achieved a long-awaited milestone by securing their first-ever one-day international (ODI) victory against the formidable Black Caps on New Zealand soil. Opting to field after winning the toss in the third ODI of the series, Bangladesh’s captain, Najmul Hossain Shanto, led a formidable bowling attack that proved to be the undoing of the Black Caps. Seamers Shoriful Islam, Tanzim Hasan Sakib, and Soumya Sarkar combined forces to dismantle the New Zealand batting lineup, claiming 9 wickets for a mere 54 runs in 20 overs.

Sakib stood out with figures of 3-14 off seven overs, while Sarkar and Shoriful contributed significantly with 3-18 off six and 3-22 off seven, respectively. The Black Caps, batting first, struggled to build a substantial total, collapsing from 68-2 to a mere 98 all out in 31.4 overs on a pitch displaying a healthy grass cover.

In a swift response, Bangladesh chased down the target with ease, losing only one wicket in the process. Najmul Hossain Shanto, who captained the side and played a pivotal role in the victory, remained unbeaten with a stellar half-century, scoring 51 off 42 balls.

The win not only marked Bangladesh’s maiden ODI triumph over the Black Caps in New Zealand but also handed the hosts their most significant loss (by wickets) on home soil in almost 23 years. This victory puts an end to New Zealand’s 17-match winning streak in ODIs at home, showcasing Bangladesh’s resilience and determination.

Despite the historic defeat, Will Young, the highest run-scorer for the Black Caps in the series with 220 runs, acknowledged the team’s lackluster performance. Young, who received the player of the series award, expressed disappointment at not putting up a stronger fight but emphasized the importance of the series win.

For Bangladesh, this victory serves as a confidence booster as they look forward to the upcoming three-match Twenty20 series against New Zealand at the same venue. Najmul Hossain Shanto, while celebrating the triumph, acknowledged the different challenges posed by T20 cricket and emphasized the need for strategic planning to carry the momentum forward.

As the cricketing world witnesses Bangladesh breaking new ground, the tour promises more excitement as the focus shifts to the T20 format, with both teams gearing up for a thrilling series ahead.
