“That explains the ‘Switch it up like Nintendo’ lyric”

Nintendo fans are convinced Sabrina Carpenter’s hit song ‘Espresso’ contains a subtle nod to The Legend Of Zelda.

Released last April as the lead single to her sixth album ‘Short n’ Sweet’, ‘Espresso’ cemented Sabrina Carpenter as a pop megastar. The catchy bop has topped charts around the world and racked up more than 2.3billion streams. However one TikTok video has revealed a potential nod to the beloved The Legend Of Zelda series.

“Sabrina Carpenter is a nerd – here’s why,” starts Morgan Brook’s video. ‘In her song ‘Espresso’, you might already know she has the line ‘Switch it up like Nintendo’ but did you know she snuck ‘Zelda’s Lullaby’ into the intro and the chorus?” The pair then play both tracks on a piano, before claiming the same notes and rhythm are used in the two songs.

‘Zelda’s Lullaby’ has been used in almost every The Legend Of Zelda game since 1991’s A Link To The Past but was made popular with 1998’s Ocarina Of Time.

The video goes on to suggest that Carpenter “got away” with the sample by changing the meter, the key and adding a few extra notes. “That’s just enough to make sure Nintendo didn’t come after her,” claims Brook.

Responding to the claims that ‘Espresso’ uses three unchanged loops from Splice, Brook wrote: “I learned that it was sampled from that, but they added the beat and stuff later. I wonder if they chose that sample due to the way it sounds like Zelda music.”

The video has also been shared on X. “So you’re telling me that Sabrina Carpenter actually snuck ‘Zelda’s Lullaby’ into her song ‘Espresso’? She’s so real for that,” wrote one fan. “Feel like my brain just got smacked (positive),” added another.

“I have had that song play every work day, twice a day, over the radio, against my will, for an entire year, and I never even noticed,” said one X user. “That fucking nerd, I love her,” said another.

Last year, Carpenter went viral for playing a Nintendo Switch console that belonged to rapper Central Cee while attending a Louis Vuitton fashion show in Paris.

Meanwhile, Evanescence‘s Amy Lee recently revealed her one and only tattoo was inspired by The Legend Of Zelda.

Sabrina Carpenter recently took over Fortnite as the icon of rhythm game Festival. Her ‘Short n’ Sweet’-inspired outfits were so popular, developers threw an “epic” dance party to celebrate the collab.

“I’ve always found it exciting for fans to be able to interact and engage with music through different art forms and to interact in a way that’s genuinely fun,” Sabrina Carpenter told Rolling Stone. “So, for the fans that haven’t been able to come to the tour, or to any new fans, this is such a special way to still be a part of ‘Short n’ Sweet’ world.”

In other news, the “faithful” Silent Hill 2 movie adaptation Return To Silent Hill has confirmed a 2026 release date.
