Newcastle United marked their return to the UEFA Champions League in some style as they thrashed French giants PSG 4-1 at St. James Park, a venue where the European elite competition made a comeback after 20 years. Newcastle’s old guards Dan Burn and Sean Longstaff, who had supported the Magpies’ since decades were on target as Miguel Almiron opened the scoring for Eddie Howe’s men.

Newcastle creates history
Newcastle United has been one of the surprise packages in the Premier League last season. They had presented themselves to be a worthy competitor for the Premier League title, and owing to the likes of Isak and Almiron’s brilliance, coupled with the strict vigil of Eddie Howe, the Magpies finished on a worthy third position, ahead of the likes of heavyweights like Liverpool and Manchester United. Due to their third place finish last season, they had been granted the opportunity to play in the Champions League, a chance they were getting after two decades. As a result, last night, was the first time in 20 years, that Toon Army experienced a Champions League game, and that too, against one of the toughest opponents and potential title-contenders, PSG. Little did anyone think that they would be humbling a Luis Enrique managed side which boasted of world class players like Kylian Mbappe and Ousmane Dembele.

Miguel Almiron fired the opener within 20 minutes, and a sense of raging enthusiasm and wild celebrations sparked at St. James Park. Thus, it is a statement of a meteoric transformation that Newcastle has undergone under the vigilance of Eddie Howe. When he was roped in as a manager at the club with the helm of Saudi owners, the Magpies were reeling at the 19th spot, and was fighting for safety in the top flight. With the 4-1 victory last night, it is a cerebral display of the diasporic transformation under Howe, which has led them to a superb victory over the Parisiens.

A famous miracle
After the final whistle blew at St. James, fans went frenzy as they realized it to be a famous victory at the park, and a result which was long lost Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, as the fans had to rewind back in time to remember their last trophy. Kylian Mbappe was considered to be the biggest test for Magpies, but the result last night, was a true test of Howe’s fighting and attacking mentality which has won several crunch games against heavyweights in the last few years. The Magpies’ simply overran their opponents, as Mbappe had to cut a sorry figure at the final whistle.

Two Geordie boys Burn and Longstaff, old guards and long-time members of the Newcastle United, provided the next two goals, and helped the Magpies’ in completing a rout of the French giants. A loud roar transpired at the end of the game which could be heard across the Tyne Bridge.

Newcastle, with their victory last night, went on top of the Champions League leaderboard. And after a miraculous outcome of the support by Toon Army, Borussia Dortmund would be prepared with a successful result and a match-up as they would be the next visitors at St. James Park.

Newcastle fans would be hoping for more in the upcoming days as they have enjoyed a fruitful week after defeating Manchester City and knocking them out of the EFL Cup, and last night’s memories would be etched in the memories of every fan, thus pushing them for a more elevating rise.
