CAPTAIN Nat Fyfe concedes it is up to underdogs Fremantle to push their way into the finals in 2019 after jealously watching cross-town rivals West Coast win a premiership this year.

Fyfe hit the track for the first time this pre-season yesterday, conceding he won’t be flying for a few months as he looks to play at least 20 games next season after only 15 this year.

The 27-year-old Brownlow medallist has had a clean-up on his left knee.

“This is my 10th pre-season. There’s no records going to be set by me in December, January, February,” Fyfe said.

“There will be a bit more of a balanced, easing back in.”

There is plenty of hype around the Dockers’ trade week acquisitions Jesse Hogan, Rory Lobb, Reece Conca and Travis Colyer but Fyfe warned they would take time to gel. He predicted a jostle for positions in a new-look forward line.

“Always temper that optimism with the fact we’ve got to get to know each other, put in a lot of hard work over the next couple of months and really get ready for round one,” he said.

“As a midfield we’ve got targets to kick to, we can build a structure around that. I don’t think we’re relying on these guys to change the whole dynamic of our footy club, but I think there’s cause for optimism.”

Fyfe conceded there may be more pressure on him in the midfield after the departure of Lachie Neale, but backed a raft of players including Connor Blakely and Stephen Hill to fill the void.

He also challenged Sean Darcy to take the No.1 ruck mantle as soon as possible.

Fyfe said they were intent on making their identity all about a winning culture after three years out of the finals.

“We’ve had the shopping list out the last few years with drafts and trading, and we’ve brought in an eclectic group of players from across the country,” he said.

“Now we’ve established a group, and the idea is to try to build around a Ross Lyon game plan that’s going to set us up to win some games of footy next year.”

Fyfe said a key to that game plan would be a camp on the Gold Coast next month — an initiative he supports.

He admitted watching the Eagles celebrate the flag had been difficult.
