South Africa's new-ball pair of Kagiso Rabada and Wiaan Mulder ripped through Bangladesh's top order in the opening session on Day 1 and left the hosts reeling at 60 for 6 at Lunch at the Shere Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka on Monday. The duo combined to bag five wickets before Keshav Maharaj struck at the stroke of Lunch.
Electing to bat, Bangladesh's batters struggled to come to terms with the movement on offer. Mulder, with his away swingers, proved quite potent in the first hour of play as he picked three wickets even as the hosts had adopted a watchful approach. Shadman Islam departed in the second over of the day while looking to play a drive away from the body, and in the process nicking the ball to the 'keeper.
Mominul Haque was undone while attempting to flick a full length delivery which took the outside edge to the 'keeper. Similarly, in Mulder's next over, Najmul Hossain Shanto's attempted clip took the leading edge and went straight into the hands of Keshav Maharaj at extra cover, reducing Bangladesh to 21 for 3 within the first half an hour.
Mahmudul Hasan, who had braced through this period against the testing spell of Kagiso Rabada, steadied the collapse briefly in the company of Mushfiqur Rahim. The duo stroked three boundaries when the opportunity presented itself, but Rabada return for his second spell and breached through the defences of Mushfiqur with a delivery that nipped in and cleaned up the batter. It was his 300th Test wicket - the fastest to reach the landmark in terms of the number of balls.
Soon enough, he even had Litton Das. However, on this occasion, it was Tristan Stubbs at gully who took a blinder to send the batter packing. In the last half an hour of play, it seemed like Mehidy Hasan was providing the support that Mahmudul needed as they braced through the difficult period and looked on course to head safely to lunch. However, in the last over of the session, Maharaj had Mehidy trapped legbefore, a decision that couldn't be overturned even with a review.
