Chelsea and Middlesbrough play out an enthralling encounter in the first leg of Carabao Cup semifinal as a Hayden Hackney heroics sealed the deal for Michael Carrick’s side. Chelsea youngster Cole Palmer missed one of the easiest chances as Mauricio Pochettino’s side has everything to play for in the second leg of this illustrious semifinal.

Middlesbrough creates history
Middlesbrough has played out one of the memorable clashes in their history when they defeated Mauricio Pochettino’s struggling Chelsea side in the first leg of Carabao Cup semifinal. In what promised to be a thrilling encounter between both, Boro stood out from their opponents, thus securing one step into the finals of the prestigious EFL Cup. With a mouth-watering clash on the cards for both sides, Boro had started with a strong line-up, with 3-4-2-1 formation, having Latte Lath spearheading the attack. Crooks and hero of the game Hackney closely followed, as defensive duties were vested upon the seasoned troika of Van den Breg, Engel and Fry.

As for the visitors Chelsea, Pochettino decided to go all guns blazing, thus naming his strongest eleven, which had Cole Palmer as the central striker, followed by veteran attacking midfielders Sterling, Callagher and Madueke. Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo were vested with deeper midfield duties, as the seasoned back four of Colwill, Disasi, Silva and Gusto were shouldering defensive duties.

Wasteful Chelsea’ woes continue
Chelsea, although have a plethora of attacking options, seems to be lacking their finish prowess, as in spite of trying out with different players, they cannot seem to go full throttle in front of the goal. To add to their woes, they keep on missing easy chances, pretty much what their Premier League season suggests. Last night was not an exception either as Cole Palmer missed a sitter from point-blank range which would have helped them score the opener, with an advantage into the second leg at their own den.

Meanwhile, Boro found a suitable reply to their opponents’ falter at their end, with Hayden Hackney scoring the winner with a swift ball from the side, which had little for Petrovic to save in it. Banking on home support, local lad Hackney found the back of the net, with a lovely assist from Isaiah Jones across the wings, thus leading the Boro crowd erupt in joy as the score line read 1-0 at the half-time. Pochettino’s expensively assembled team would be looking for all sorts of answers in the second leg two weeks later at Stamford Bridge, as he was heard saying after the game about his side’s performance.

Poch mentioned, “We had too many chances to score where we didn’t score. That is football. We have another 90 minutes at Stamford Bridge, and I think we need to be positive.”

Missed opportunities
Palmer needed a simple tap-in to score the equalizer on the fourth minute of first-half, when the ball ricocheted off Boro keeper Glover’s chest to the youngster, whose scurried effort sailed over the crossbar, thus keeping the score line at a ghastly outcome of 1-0 in favor of the hosts.

Michael Carrick was heard saying after the game about his team’s exceptional performance, as he said, “To beat a team of the quality of Chelsea, in any circumstances for us, is unbelievable. The lads were just exceptional. It was an incredible night.”

Liverpool hosts Fulham on the other semifinal as the Reds would look to maintain their winning momentum.
