Lionel Messi’s World Cup jerseys sold at an auction in New York
Sotheby’s recently announced in November that they are prepared to auction Lionel Messi’s six jerseys that he wore in the 2022 World Cup. The six jerseys he wore were against Saudi Arabia and Mexico, as well as later games against Australia, the Netherlands, and Croatia and the final against France.
However, the jersey that he wore against Poland in the group-stage match was missing, as that jersey was likely swapped with an opponent.
According to Forbes, the jerseys worn by the Argentine star in Qatar have been sold off at an auction for a whopping $7.803 million by New York-based auction house Sotheby’s.

Messi’s jerseys unable to break Michael Jordan’s auction record
Furthermore, these jerseys are now the most expensive Messi item ever sold and the third most valuable sports jersey behind Michael Jordan’s 1998 NBA Finals jersey, which sold for $10.1 million.
The second is the late Diego Maradona’s “Hand of God” goal jersey worn during the 1986 World Cup, which sold for $9.28 million in May 2022.
The previous record for the most expensive Messi item was the jersey that he wore against Real Madrid in El Classico in 2017. That jersey was bought for $450,000 million.
Moreover, a portion of this amount will be donated to the UNICAS Project to help children suffering from rare diseases.
Since winning the World Cup Lionel Messi’s career has taken a drastic change. The Argentine left PSG in the summer to join David Beckham’s co-owned MLS club Inter Miami.
