Keith Richards joins Matt Wilkinson on Apple Music 1 to discuss The Rolling Stones new album Hackney Diamonds, out now. Keith discusses the possibility of the band playing as holograms and Charlie Watts and the band’s new drummer Steve Jordan. Keith also talks about the guests on the new album including Paul McCartney, Lady Gaga and Stevie Wonder, and what’s next for the Stones.
Keith Richards on Charlie Watts and their new drummer Steve Jordan…
Charlie had an incredible stamp on what he did. I'm actually at the moment still saying thank god there's a Steve Jordan because Charlie Watts recommended Steve to us many years ago, and so it was about the only other guy that I could think that could fill that spot, man. Because I think otherwise, I don't know-
Steve and I have been laughing that sometimes on the last couple of tours, every now then and I turn around and for some reason I expect to see Charlie. I guess because sometimes Steve can play so much like Charlie that I'm fooled that I turn around and there's Steve Jordan. We play around with that. But hell, early days, Steve's only been with us two years, this band's been going 60.

Well, I certainly wouldn't rule it out. I'm pretty sure that it is bound to happen. Do I want it? Now, that's another thing. But I don't know if I want to hang around that long enough, man. But at the same time, it won't be up to me, will it?
Keith Richards on Paul McCartney playing on the album…
I felt that it was about bloody time. I've known Paul for 60 years, just about. Although him and John did do a few backup vocals with us in the sixties. Great fun to play with. At the end of it, I just said, "well, that's just like the old days."
Keith Richards on Stevie Wonder and Lady Gaga playing on the album…
The thing is, it was such a spontaneous and organic session. We knew that Stevie was coming by and I think Gaga only dropped in because she happened to be working in a studio across the hallway and just walked in, in the middle of the take and started to work her way in. Playing with Stevie is always mind-blowing and I thought that Lady did an incredible job, man. She snaked her way in there and took it over and gave as good as she got with Mick and it was great fun.
Keith Richards on touring with Stevie Wonder in the 70s…
Yeah, in the seventies it would be in Europe most of the time. I think we did some in America. But yes, obviously Stevie was much younger then, and that rumour in his band was that he could still actually see. I think they remained rumours. But that was then. I think either Stevie was putting them on or they were putting me on.
Keith Richards on the next Stones album…
Good question. I think when we recover from Hackney Diamonds, we'll be giving it a good thought. But the reason these 12 are on it, these are the best. Also, you've got to draw a line somewhere. Some of them, because they're not totally ready yet, they're good, but they need a little work. But there's another one in there, I think maybe with a few more additions. But like I say, at the moment, let me get this one out the way, man.
