The British actor plays a cult leader in the horror sequel
28 Years Later cast member Jack O’Connell has given some insight into the character he plays in the film, saying that he doesn’t know how to describe him yet.
The third film in the series that began with 2002’s 28 Days Later sees Danny Boyle returning to the director’s chair, and telling the story of people who have survived the apocalyptic outbreak living on a remote island.
The action centres around a father and son who leave the island on a mission to the mainland, only to discover the horrors of The Infected waiting for them. O’Connell will appear alongside co-stars Jodie Comer, Ralph Fiennes, and Aaron Taylor-Johnson.
Little is known about the film, but in an interview with GQ to promote his current release Sinners, the British actor was quizzed on his character, who has an unusual name. “Yes, Sir Lord Jimmy Crystal, (to give the) full moniker” he said. He’s a… (O’Connell hesitates) He is a gas c**t”.
Official press material for the film describes his character as “a cult leader with a dark past”, perhaps explaining why he has such a grand title.
When pressed on what his description actually means, he elaborated: “I don’t know quite how to describe him yet. But thrilling to portray, that’s for sure. He definitely exists in the darker pocket, certainly in contrast to anything I’ve ever played before”.
The film is released on June 20, with a follow up, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple directed by Nia DaCosta, arriving in 2026. Recently, Boyle discussed the possibility of original star Cillian Murphy returning to the franchise.
“Like all good things in life, you may have to wait a little while for him to make his appearance” he said, implying the Oscar winner may appear later in the franchise. Elsewhere, film fans were delighted by the latest trailer for the film, exclaiming: “Danny Boyle is so back”.
