WTC 2025 points table: In a historic and action-packed encounter at Newlands, Cape Town, Team India secured a momentous seven-wicket victory over South Africa on Day 2 of the second Test. The match, which witnessed a total of 23 wickets falling on the opening day, etched its name in cricket history as the shortest completed Test, concluding in just 107 overs.

India’s triumph had significant implications for the World Test Championship (WTC) standings for the 2023-25 cycle. With this win, the Rohit Sharma-led side catapulted to the top of the table, amassing 26 points from four matches and boasting a remarkable points percentage of 54.16%. This ascent was particularly noteworthy considering India had slipped to the sixth position after their loss in the first Test in Centurion, coupled with a deduction of two WTC points for a slow over rate.

On the other hand, South Africa, who initially held the top spot with a points percentage of 100%, found themselves in the second position after the loss in the second Test. They now have one win and a loss from two matches, with a points percentage of 50%.

Returning to the thrilling encounter, South Africa began Day 2 with an overnight score of 62/3, trailing India by 36 runs, with David Bedingham (7*) and Aiden Markram (36*) at the crease. Jasprit Bumrah (6/61), the speedster in sublime form, immediately made an impact in the first over, dismissing Bedingham for 11. He went on to claim the wickets of Kyle Verreynne (9 off 7), Marco Jansen (11 off 9), and Keshav Maharaj (3 off 4), completing his ninth five-wicket haul in Test cricket.

Markram, witnessing wickets fall around him, shifted gears and showcased his brilliance by scoring his seventh Test hundred off just 99 balls, contributing to South Africa’s second innings total of 176. Setting India a target of 79 runs for victory, the visitors chased it down in a mere 12 overs. Yashasvi Jaiswal top-scored with 28 (23), and India, in a historic feat, became the first Asian team to win a Test in Cape Town, leveling the series 1-1.
