The ILT20 (Innovative League T20) has unveiled a new wildcard rule, allowing franchises to sign two players as wildcards from the upcoming second season onwards. This addition provides teams with the flexibility to enhance their squads with additional talent, with a maximum spending cap set at US$250,000 for these wildcard signings.
Franchise Squad-Building and Wildcard Spending Limit
In adherence to ILT20 rules, franchises begin with a purse of US$2.5 million to assemble a squad of 22 players. While all six teams have finalized their squads for the 2024 season after player retentions, the introduction of wildcards presents an opportunity for additional strategic signings. The wildcards are not mandatory, but franchises have the liberty to include them in their squads either before or during the season.
The second season of ILT20, featuring six teams, is scheduled to commence on January 19 in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), culminating with the final on February 18. This season promises exciting cricketing action and strategic player acquisitions.
If a franchise has already utilized its entire purse, the ILT20 permits them to spend a maximum of 10% of the purse to secure the wildcard player(s). For teams with an available balance in their purse, they can leverage it to acquire wildcard player(s) within the prescribed $250,000 limit. The ILT20 has emphasized that a wildcard player cannot be replaced with a subsequent wildcard signing once finalized.

Franchise Awareness and Current Status of Wildcard Signings
ILT20 informed franchises about the wildcard option this week, offering an additional avenue for team management to strengthen their squads strategically. As of now, there have been no official wildcard signings, but the provision remains open for franchises to explore.
The wildcard rule is the latest addition to ILT20’s innovative approach to cricket leagues. In a recent announcement, the league introduced the concept of a Super-sub, allowing teams to bring in a designated impact player during a match, akin to the Impact player rule in the IPL (Indian Premier League). Notably, a minimum of two UAE players must be part of the playing XI at all times when utilizing the Super-sub option.
With these new rules and innovations, ILT20 aims to elevate the excitement and strategic depth of the league. The wildcard signings, coupled with the Super-sub option, offer franchises more tools to adapt and optimize their playing elevens during the course of matches.
