Gwen Stefani has admitted she feels "almost guilty" about her ambition.
The 54-year-old hitmaker has opened up about how her writing style differs from other musicians.
In a recent interview with Nylon, the No Doubt star admitted that she sometimes feels a tinge of jealousy towards other singers who get hits tailor-made for them. However, when she has tried to work with a team of songwriters and producers to make a hit, the results have been inauthentic.
"A lot of the pop writers that I'd worked with started getting really different from the way I write," she told the publication. "I was like, 'Why are you counting syllables?' Or they were trying so hard to go for a hit, where I'm like: 'I'm not chasing that.' A hit is the greatest thing in the world, but it has to be from nowhere."
Gwen then explained that she sometimes feels "guilty" about being unable to turn off her creative drive.
"I almost feel guilty about it, or like I have to justify it or feel bad that I'm doing it," the Sweet Escape singer said of creating new music. "Like, 'You should just get on with your life.' But I really still want to do it!"
She added, "I want to live my purpose. I don't want to be greedy. I want to contribute still. I don't know."
