Cricket Australia (CA) has initiated an investigation into an incident involving flamboyant all-rounder Glenn Maxwell, who was rushed to a hospital after a late-night party in Adelaide last week. Maxwell, a key player in Australia’s victorious World Cup campaign in India, was reportedly drinking and attending a concert by ‘Six and Out,’ the band featuring former Australian fast bowler Brett Lee when he felt unwell.

In response to the incident, CA issued a statement saying, “Cricket Australia is aware of an incident involving Glenn Maxwell in Adelaide at the weekend and is seeking further information.”
Maxwell, who recently resigned as captain of the BBL side Melbourne Stars, was not included in the 13-man squad for the three-match ODI series against the West Indies scheduled from February 2 to 6. CA clarified that the incident was not related to his exclusion from the ODI squad, stating that the decision was made based on his individual management plan following the BBL. Maxwell is expected to return for the T20 series.
Although he was discharged from the hospital after a short stay and has resumed training, the nature of the incident raises concerns, especially given Maxwell’s previous struggles with injuries. In the ODI World Cup in India, he suffered a concussion when he fell off a golf cart in Ahmedabad. Additionally, in 2022, Maxwell broke his leg during a slip while running at a friend’s birthday celebration, keeping him out of action for over three months.
Glenn Maxwell set to miss series against West Indies
Australia has included Jake Fraser-McGurk and uncapped pace bowler Xavier Bartlett in their ODI squad for the upcoming Dettol series against West Indies. The announcement comes as Glenn Maxwell takes a break for management reasons ahead of the T20Is against West Indies and New Zealand, and Jhye Richardson is ruled out due to injury.
With the absence of Maxwell and Richardson, the experienced Steve Smith is set to lead the ODI team in the three-match series scheduled to commence on February 2. This series presents a significant opportunity for Fraser-McGurk and Bartlett to showcase their skills on the international stage and make a mark in Australian cricket.
