Tom Stewart is in for a busy 2019.
Not only has the Geelong star begun his preseason duties, but the backman will also serve as the Cats’ new AFLW outfit’s defensive assistant coach.
“I’m really grateful for the opportunity the club has provided me,” Stewart said.
“Over the last two years at Geelong I have been able to develop significantly as a player, and I’m looking forward to being able to develop my coaching skills over the next few months with the AFLW group.”
The All-Australian — who will work alongside senior coach Paul Hood, former Cat Aaron Black and Natalie Wood — has previously coached at his local club, South Barwon, in the Geelong Football League and will embark on his Level 2 coaching course over the next few months.
The Cats’ head of women’s football Simone Bellears said the team’s coaching line-up — which also includes two development coaches — was diverse but valuable as the club prepares for its inaugural season in the women’s competition.
“Our coaching group is one which boasts diverse football background and experiences, and we are confident in the way they will educate and lead our AFLW team in their first year,” she said.
