As rumours of Sony Computer Entertainment’s (SCE) Project Morpheus virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD) for PlayStation 4 began to crop up ahead of its reveal in March 2014 Evolution Studios’ Driveclub was a title many speculated would support the device. However Project Morpheus’ reveal came and went without so much as a mention of the title and was later confirmed not to feature support. That doesn’t mean that the developer isn’t working with the technology.

Driveclub director Paul Rustchynsky recently revealed as much in an interview with Redbull, stating that the developer had a ‘dedicated team’ for the technology. “Project Morpheus is a fantastic piece of hardware and it’s something that really excites me as a gamer,” the developer stated. “Evolution has a dedicated team who have been working on it from day one, so we have a keen eye on it – but it’s not something we’re looking at for Driveclub just now.”

It sounds more likely that a Driveclub sequel or Evolution Studios’ next project would support Project Morpheus, then. Driveclub itself is schedule to launch on PlayStation 4 in October 2014, long before Project Morpheus will be launching. SCE head of Worldwide Studios Shuhei Yoshida has in the past said that the title in its current form doesn’t compliment the HMD. Perhaps the developer could optimise the title for support following its release? That certainly seems to be what other teams anticipate doing.

As for the device itself, there is hope that SCE will showcase Project Morpheus at the upcoming Gamescom 2014 on 13th – 17th August in Cologne, Germany. VRFocus will continue to follow the HMD going forward, reporting back with any more news and updates.
