Britney Spears has revealed that she had an abortion while dating Justin Timberlake.
In a preview of her forthcoming tell-all memoir, The Woman in Me, the pop star revealed that she had fallen pregnant while in a relationship with Justin but had an abortion as he "didn't want to be a father".
"It was a surprise, but for me, it wasn't a tragedy. I loved Justin so much. I always expected us to have a family together one day. This would just be much earlier than I'd anticipated," Britney wrote in the excerpt obtained by People. "But Justin definitely wasn't happy about the pregnancy. He said we weren't ready to have a baby in our lives, that we were way too young."
Britney, 41, and the NSYNC star, 42, famously dated from 1999 until 2002.
The Gimme More hitmaker continued, "If it had been left up to me alone, I never would have done it. And yet Justin was so sure that he didn't want to be a father."
Speaking of the abortion, Britney shared, "To this day, it's one of the most agonizing things I have ever experienced in my life."
Two years after Britney and Justin split, she married dancer Kevin Federline. The pair welcomed two sons, Sean Preston, 18 and Jayden James, 17.
Meanwhile, Justin and his wife, actress Jessica Biel, share two sons, Silas, eight, and Phineas, two.
The highly anticipated memoir is set to be released on 24 October.
